This last weekend, I shot family portraits of the lovely Penderghast family at one of my favorite beaches in Orange County ⎯ Victoria Beach. It’s such a fun, photogenic location and one of Orange County’s “hidden gems.” I featured the location in one of my recent videos titled Hidden Gems of Orange County.
One of the coolest features of Victoria Beach is the infamous Pirate Tower; a glorified staircase that leads up to a private residence up above on the bluff. It was built in the early 1900’s by California state senator William E. Brown from Los Angeles as a means for accessing the beach below his estate. I’ve read that the property has changed hands several times throughout the last century and at one point it even belonged to Bette Midler.
We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day with clear skies and plenty of sunshine. I took several family photos of the Penderghast’s along with some senior portraits of their daughter and headshots of the other kids. Cindy really wanted to get a cool shot of the waves breaking behind them in the background and in a cruel demonstration of careful-what-you-wish-for, it happened:
If you’re wondering how to get to Victoria Beach, check it out on Google Maps down below. You’ll want to park along the Southbound side of S Coast Hwy near McAulay Place and then walk down McAulay Pl to the public stairway along Victoria Drive.
